Recent Massive Data Breach – 5 Steps to Take

Presented by Marc Aarons

Given the comprehensiveness of the massive data leak that was recently uncovered, I wanted to make sure you’re aware of this event and offer some helpful online security tips that I came across.

Cybersecurity researchers recently uncovered a staggering 16 billion login credentials in a collection of leaked data. While many of these are from older breaches and include duplicates, the compilation is significant due to how the data is organized, making it easier for bad actors to attempt account takeovers. Here’s what you should know:

  • The leak includes usernames, passwords, and URLs from various platforms, including Google, Apple, Facebook, GitHub, and others.
  • This wasn’t a single new breach, but rather a combination of multiple breaches, likely caused by malware that had captured data from infected devices.
  • Experts say much of it may be recycled, but the scale and structure still pose a serious risk.

What you can do to stay protected:

  1. Change passwords for any accounts that may be affected.
  2. Use strong, unique passwords for each site (a password manager helps!).
  3. Enable multi-factor authentication — preferably using app-based options.
  4. Where possible, switch to passkeys for added protection. Here is how to set up passkeys on FacebookApple, and Google.
  5. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

I hope this is helpful information for you. I know I will be taking these tips to heart myself. As always, if I can be of help with anything this summer, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
